Science Department

Welcome

Welcome to the Science Department of the USS Southern Cross

This department, as the name implies, is responsible for observations, research, and experiments in any of the sciences, including mathematics, statistics, physics (physical and temporal), chemistry, botany, zoology, geology, cosmology, and others.

The Department is headed by the Chief Science Officer (CSO) who is supported by a wide range of specialist science officers with a range of responsibilities.

Some of our officers specialise in a particular discipline, but the Chief Science Officer is expected to be familiar with most of the sciences and rely on his or her staff for particular expertise. The Department has some overlap with the Medical Department in terms of microbiology, xenobiology, and life sciences.

On the main bridge of our ship, the Science Officers man the science stations, which are consoles designed to monitor scientific activity aboard the ship and in close proximity.

So if you have an interest in Science and Technology, this is the place for you.

Science Department Structure:

Star Trek Science and Technology Officer: This person studies and reports on historical and recent (or projected) canon and non-canon Star Trek science and technology that is of interest to the USS Southern Cross crew and guests. Requirements: OTS, SCE, and an interest in all things science, as it pertains to Star Trek.

Sci-Fi Science and Technology Officer: This person studies and reports on historical and recent (or projected) science and technology as seen in the world of science fiction that is of interest to the USS Southern Cross crew and guests. Requirements: OTS, SCE, and an interest in all things science, as it pertains to Science Fiction.

Australasian Science and Technology Officer: This person studies and reports on historical and recent (or projected) science and technology that directly affects the area of Earth known as Australia, New Zealand, and nearby areas that is of interest to the USS Southern Cross crew and guests. Each Science and Technology Officer is responsible for focusing on their assigned area, but may offer tidbits, articles, and information regarding any of the divisions within the sciences alone or in collaboration with other Science and Technology Officers. One of these officers will also serve as Assistant Chief Science Officer (ACSO), and is appointed at the discretion of the Chief Science Officer (from the Star Trek, Australasia, Terran, and Sci-Fi Science Officer pool with approval from the CO). The Science and Technology Officers will be requested to submit, at minimum, one article per year for publication in the ScuttleButt and/or Communique through coordination with the CSO.

Other Science Department Staff:

Science and Technology Officers: These personnel contribute to all science areas without concentration in one area. Requirement: OTS and an interest in all things science.

Science and Technology Crewmen: These personnel contribute to all science areas without concentration in one area. These positions are filled with non-commissioned crew. Requirement: an interest in all things science.

Each member of the Science Department staff is to offer tidbits, articles, and information regarding any of the divisions within the sciences, through coordination with the CSO.
